MEDIA CRITICISM

No second chance for Second Life

By: Coyne Nagy

SECOND Life is dead, according to sources in the Danish media.

Ghost party in Second Life
GHOSTS: These spooks know how to party
And it is not just Google’s new Lively which has administered the final nail in the coffin, rather the failure of Second Life to match its own hype from previous years.

Danish firm DR published an article last weekend which proclaims the death of SL.

Sharp-eyed AvaStar reader Heidi Ballinger spotted the article and blogged about it, creating a flurry of resentment around the grid.

While some people quoted in the article – including a PhD student – will not worry Linden Lab greatly, the comments of business analyst Per Andersen will pose more concern: "Second Life is dead in a business context", he was quoted as saying.

Burial

With companies like IBM and Sun Microsystems continuing to invest heavily in-world, there is strong evidence to the contrary.

But just as many companies were pulled in to Second Life by the positive media buzz, it is now possible others could be put off when the tide turns.

DR even went as far as filming a mock (real life) burial for Second Life as they filmed a report.

That sparked Ballinger, who herself works with companies entering Second Life for Power Match, to throw an impromptu ghost party to show that there was still some action in Second Life yet.

It is true that Second Life lacks the popularity that it used to.
It is due to a number of reasons:
    1) Its far too complex for noobs. Only the stalwart and steadfast remain in SL for any length of time.
    2) Failure to deliver on promises of stability after 5 years.
    3) Commercializing the grid. Opening the way to companies like IBM and Sun - it makes the Lab look like it has stopped caring about the quality of SL and is only interested in the money.
4)Working on all the wrong things. Jira is a joke, important fixes go unlooked at while stupid fixes get put to priority through the residents idiotic voting.
5)Support system is a pile of crap. Like the cornfield, the support system is no longer capable of supporting the amount of users on second life because the number of people on the Governance team is vastly inferior in comparison.
    6) Lag. Lag lag lag.
    7) A poor business plan from the outset. A new CEO with an even poorer outlook for SL.

All these things combined have killed off SL completely and with the vultures like Lively now circling, the future of Linden Lab and Second Life is, at best, dubious.

jeez. friggin stupid. Its called "Summertime"

There's always some lame-ass very little inworld opinion media company that likes to exert an opinion without know whats what.

Yeah, I can say easily SL slowed up a little in June and July. So what??!?!?! that doesn't mean approaching death.

Its obvious Danish firm DR is a joke. They saw the downward premium stats over the past two months and decide to contrive an article.

Did anyone mention to DR about Open Source and OpenGrid coming very soon?

Sure, SL has lost its "hype"... now I hope over time jerkoffs won't try to write stories about false failures, and instead, start using Second Life like the rest of the world.
SL is gonna be mainstream in a few years, guaranteed.

Why is lively.com called dead? There are 100.000 users daily and they miss content - so lets do the next step following the speach bubbles!

    more at german section:

Wieso soll lively.com tot sein? Täglich machen 100.000 mit und danach sind diese fit für mehr und suchen content, denn der steckt in den Sprechblasen, sieht man mal von der ersten Minimal Kunst die von ´Lego Princess´ geboten wurde ab. Sie hat in lively den höchsten Legoturm der Welt gebaut und dieser ist nun in SL zu sehen - in lively ist der bereits zusammengebrochen. Danke Google weiter so! Bring die user in 3D!

In the world of online gaming, social sims, like Second Life only attract so many people, most see this as nothing more than a glorified chat room, the now cancelled Sims Online is a good indication of this, while games like World of Warcraft have millions of subscribers, when people come in and find out to make in world money you have to..

    1. Know/learn how to build and or script to sell things.
    2. Get a virtual job or find something you can do like sing etc
    3.Buy the money

Most leave within a week or less, right now the U.S economy is hurting bad, with rising gas prices/ food prices, housing failures etc, most people are finding their spending money dwindling and are cutting back on expenses, and I am sure SL is going to start feeling the effects of that, as premium users drop down or leave, and those paying tiers drop them or sell off their land. things like that and the recent VAT taxe for the EU being applied is going to wind up hurting a social sim like SL that relies on real money to move it's economy.

lmao, second life is dead ???? lool what crapt this guy smoked?

I mean it will inm a far future die, but not for this crap of google made for noobs, some are pretty happy because the don't need to pay, ok, but second life u can create your content. on Lively u have to life with their content if u like or if your don't like.

I've tryied the lively and it's so simple as a normal chat room, really nothing special.

Still some people complain onm lag on SL??? ok, they don't really know what are the 300 reasons for lag. but that doesn't means that SL is dead no? I own a sim, and there is no lag there, do u know why ?? (stupid question no? If u don't know what is lag, u don't know how to prevent).

I really agree with this comment "Most leave within a week or less, right now the U.S economy is hurting bad, with rising gas prices/ food prices, housing failures etc, most people are finding their spending money dwindling and are cutting back on expenses, and I am sure SL is going to start feeling the effects of that, as premium users drop down or leave, and those paying tiers drop them or sell off their land. things like that and the recent VAT taxe for the EU being applied is going to wind up hurting a social sim like SL that relies on real money to move it's economy."
